4-H NASSAU & COBB COUNTY ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

MET 4-H Nassau (NY) & Cobb County (GA) Enrichment Program is a recognized 4-H Charter with the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Nassau County and the University of Georgia Extension Office in Cobb County.  In partnership with their 4-H Youth Development Program, MET will be supporting the mission and purpose of Georgia 4-H:

The mission of NY and GA 4-H is to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. This mission is accomplished through "hands-on" learning experiences that focus on agricultural and environmental issues, agriculture awareness, leadership, communication skills, foods and nutrition, health, energy conservation, and citizenship.

Through MET’s collaboration with 4-H in Nassau and Cobb County, students will be able to have both classroom and hands-on learning sessions to provide an introduction to horse care, mounted riding lessons and competitive events.  Mounted riding lessons will be available to our MET members in the hunt seat discipline.  Competition events may include State 4-H Horse Show, statewide 4-H Horse Judging competitions and 4-H Quiz Bowls.

4-H is a national positive youth development program that aims to empower young people with the skills and knowledge they need to become responsible, engaged, and contributing members of their communities. The program focuses on developing leadership, citizenship, and life skills through a variety of hands-on learning experiences.

The name "4-H" stands for "Head, Heart, Hands, and Health," which represent the four areas of youth development that the program aims to promote. The program is open to youth and offers a wide range of activities and programs in areas such as agriculture, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), healthy living, and civic engagement. 4-H strives to find what “sparks” a youth’s interest and through that “spark” youth develop important life skills, all while having fun.

Youth living in Nassau and Cobb County ranging from Kindergarten through the twelfth grade are eligible to participate in this program.  Students are not required to own a horse nor are they required to have any past equine exposure.

Membership in our 4-H Horse and Pony Club can be a great way for young people to develop a range of skills, from riding and horse care to leadership and community service. It also connects them with a community of peers who share their interest in horses and ponies.

Here are some of the activities that might be included in a 4-H Horse and Pony Club:

1. Horse Care Education: Members can learn about topics such as feeding, grooming, health care, and stable management. This might also involve learning about different breeds of horses and ponies, their characteristics, and their care requirements.

2. Riding Lessons: Members participate in riding lessons, learning various riding disciplines. This also includes safety training and learning how to handle a horse or pony.

3. Horse Shows and Competitions: Participate in local, regional, or national horse shows and competitions. Members can show their horses in a variety of categories, and they might also participate in riding competitions.

4. Community Service: Like all 4-H clubs, a Horse and Pony club involves various elements of community service or leadership development. This might involve organizing events, participating in community outreach, or other similar activities.

5. Field Trips and Guest Speakers: Clubs might organize field trips to horse farms, racetracks, or other relevant locations. They also meet with guest speakers such as veterinarians, farriers, professional riders, or other experts in the field to talk to the club.

6. Horse Science: Members learn about the science of horses, including subjects like equine anatomy, physiology, genetics, nutrition, and behavior.
